Job Purpose

The Head of Procurement is responsible for leading the procurement function for Cipla North America, ensuring the efficient, cost-effective acquisition of materials, services, and capital expenditures necessary for pharmaceutical operations across multiple manufacturing sites and Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMOs). This role is pivotal in developing and executing procurement strategies that align with organizational goals, managing supplier relationships, negotiating favorable contracts, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and company policies. Success in this position requires deep expertise in pharmaceutical or healthcare procurement, as well as exceptional leadership and strategic vision.

Major Activities / Tasks

  1. Develop and implement strategies for procurement to ensure the most cost-effective & timely delivery of the right material aligned to overall business objective
  • Develop and execute procurement strategies and optimize supply chain performance in alignment with Global procurement and with company objectives.
  • Lead efforts to identify opportunities for cost savings, process improvements, and risk mitigation.
  • Develop, manage and monitor RFQ (Request for Quotation) Process
  • Assess & analyse quotations considering the total cost associated with procuring an item or service and finalizing supplier
  • Manage and Monitor PO Generation & approval process
  • Manage and monitor Information, material and Monetary flow with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensure the entire process is transparent and as per specifics of the requirement
  1. Develop and maintain long-term relationships with Suppliers to meet profitability and customer satisfaction goals in alignment with global procurement strategies.

  • Assess supply & supplier risk mitigation through continuous research and communication with various stakeholders
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements to secure favorable terms and ensure the on-time delivery of high-quality products and services.
  • Monitor supplier performance and resolve any issues or disputes that may arise.

  • Minimize impact of supplier shortages by proactively identifying and resolving potential material supply issues, timely communication, collaborating with Supply Chain for inventory build, and proper escalation.
  • Evaluate the risks of the Supply Chain and ensure risks are identified much in advance so they can be managed proactively without affecting operations.
  1. Staying Informed to Enhance Procurement Strategy through market analytics and insights
  • Continuously monitor industry trends and developments within the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.
  • Analyze market conditions, including shifts in pricing, supply availability, and regulatory changes.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies that can impact procurement and supply chain processes.
  • Leverage industry insights to make data-driven decisions and optimize procurement strategies.
  • Proactively adjust procurement approaches to address evolving business needs and mitigate potential risks.
  1. Develop and implement inbound & outbound logistics management procedures to achieve 100% on time in full (OTIF)
  • Define processes for the efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods   
  • Assess and define optimum delivery terms, freight class and rates
  • Develop and manage tracking mechanisms for prompt clearance and delivery of shipments
  • Proactive assurance of all customs related formalities
  • Enforce SLAs in order to ensure the effectiveness and enrolment of logistic service providers with end-to-end logistics modules
  • Control and check possible delays, taking any corrective action so that delays are minimized, and the stated goals of the organization are achieved in a desired manner
  • Ensure continuous and clear information flow with Service providers, customers and management.
  1. Manage Procurement Budgets, efforts to save costs, enhance efficiency and productivity
  • Oversee the procurement budget, track expenses, and ensure cost-effective purchasing decisions. Manage KPI’s to measure, control and benchmark procurement activities including savings, contract trackers, spend under each procurement category.
  • Report on procurement performance and savings initiatives to management.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, process improvements including technology upgrades, and innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
  1. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Team Leadership
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders, including global procurement, R&D, manufacturing, quality assurance, supply planning and finance teams, to understand their procurement needs and provide support in sourcing and managing materials and services.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing procurement team. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented environment that encourages professional growth and continuous improvement.
  • Identify the training needs of employees. Ensure on the job training of team on a regular basis.
  • Increase team accountability by clearly outlining expectations and ways of working.

 

Skills & Knowledge

 

Educational qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in business, Supply Chain Management, Finance, Engineering or a related field. An MBA or advanced degree is preferred.

Relevant certifications such as Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) or Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) are preferred.

Relevant experience: 

Minimum of 10 years of procurement experience within the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of procurement best practices and supply chain management.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to handle ambiguity, strategic thinking and decision making
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills. Ability to build cross-functional relationships and to interface effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Proficiency in procurement software and tools, MSOffice, SAP
  • Sensitivity and understanding of Cultural differences and the ability to effectively engage on a global basis
  • Ability to creatively solve business problems at speed, working with a high level of independence.
  • Planning and organization skills—Ability to establish work plans, multi-task and prioritize simultaneous initiatives.
  • Team management – Ability to manage teams and collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Ability to work in a cross-geography and matrix organization and reporting structures.

 

Pay Range: 188k - 201k USD
